PMADs
What You Should Know About Maternal Mental Health
One in five new and expectant mothers is affected by a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). Although these conditions are widespread, many women struggle in silence because of stigma, shame, or not knowing where to find support.
PMADs include a broad spectrum of conditions, such as prenatal and postpartum anxiety and depression, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and postpartum psychosis. They can arise at any time during pregnancy and throughout the first year after birth. Despite the common label “postpartum depression,” half of PMAD cases actually begin during pregnancy.
Some key facts about PMADs below:
PMADs are the #1 leading complication in childbirth
PMADs occur at significantly higher rates than gestational diabetes, hypertension, and other pregnancy-related conditions—yet routine screening for PMADs remains non-mandatory.
